Question

Ai promt loss of quality

When I edit an image using “Edit with prompt,” the first version looks fine. But when I keep making updates to the image, the quality gets worse and worse. It’s like saving a JPEG repeatedly, where the compression degrades the image each time. After only about three changes, the image has become unusable due to the heavy compression.

Hey @Jonas1, thanks for flagging this!

I’m not seeing the same image quality degradation on my end, so I’d love to gather a bit more context to help pinpoint what might be causing this in your case.

Could you let me know:

  • Whether this is happening in the Figma desktop app, the web browser, or both?

  • How are your prompts look like (short and simple vs. longer or more detailed)?

  • If you’re able to share a quick screen recording, that would be incredibly helpful so I can see exactly how the quality changes across edits.

Thank you for your help!

I’m using the Mac desktop app. MacOs, Tahoe 26.1

I recreated it right now, and this was the exact steps, using the Gemini 3 Pro (with Nano Banana) setting.

  1. I hit the “Make image” button using a two-sentence-long prompt. “An image of a man in his 30s using a phone in an office. The image should look like a still from an 80s movie.”
  2. After the image has been generated, the prompt modal window changes into a before/after view.
  3. I enter “Describe your changes” input field and write another prompt. “Change his shirt into a cable knitted navy sweater and a white oxford shirt.”
  4. (Updated image appears, now with more compression artifacts.)
  5. When repeating Step 3 the image quality gets worse, as described.

I have tried with other prompts, and the result is the same – a slight degradation of the image quality.

Hey @Jonas1, thank you for taking the time to recreate this and write out the exact steps, this is very helpful!

I’ve gone ahead and created a support ticket for you so the team can investigate this properly. Your ticket number is #1687694 for reference.
I accidentally mentioned Figma Make in the ticket, but I’ve already added an internal note correcting that and included a link to this forum post so the team has the full context. I didn’t want to send a follow-up email and risk any confusion on your side.

Someone from the team will reach out as soon. Thank you for your patience while we look into it!

Hey @Katishhhhh, thanks for chiming in and confirming you’re seeing this too.

I can also create a support ticket on your behalf. For that I’ll need a bit more context from you:

  • Is this happening in the Figma desktop app, the web version, or both?

  • Are your prompts usually short and simple, or more detailed?

  • If you’re able to share a quick screen recording, that would be super helpful so we can see how the quality changes as you iterate.

Feel free to also include your device model and OS. The more detail we have, the easier it’ll be for the team to investigate.

Hi, @Gayani_S

  • Yes, its happening in the Figma desktop app and the web version
  • Prompts usually short and simple
  • I work on MacBook Air 2017, macOS Monterey

The images are generated in good quality, but with each subsequent edit the quality decreases.

Here is my screen recording (download from google disk for good quality). Also, thanks for your work and very useful features! It would also be cool if it were possible to regenerate specific places in pictures.
