Access to full version history and frame-level creation tracking

Hello Figma Support team,

I have a question regarding version history availability after upgrading my plan.

I currently have access to a file where version history only shows approximately the last 30 days. The file itself was created much earlier.

Before upgrading to a paid plan, I would like to clarify:

1. If I upgrade my account, will I be able to access version history older than 30 days for this existing file?
2. Or are older autosave versions permanently deleted and cannot be restored after upgrade?
3. Does upgrading unlock hidden history, or only preserves history going forward?

Additionally, I have a more specific question:

If multiple projects were created within a single file (for example, several designs made for one client inside one draft file), is it possible to determine when a specific frame or design block was originally created?

For example:
- Can I see the creation date of a specific frame?
- Or track when a particular element first appeared in the file through version history?

This is important for me to understand whether detailed authorship and timeline tracking is possible at the object (frame) level, not just file-level history.

This is time-sensitive for me.

Thank you in advance for your clarification.

Hi @OlgaRublevskaia!

Hopefully this reply comes at a time that is still helpful for you. To answer your questions in specific, though, :

  1. Yes, upgrading to any paid plan will unlock full version history for all your files.
  2. They are not permanently deleted, though you’ll return to only seeing the last 30 days if you downgrade.
  3. Upgrading unlocks seeing the full history; in other words, we always save it fully but only provide access to the last 30 days on Starter.

For your more specific question, there isn’t a way right now to check on the creation of a particular frame or layer in file version history, though you could revisit older versions and monitor changes. There is another way, though, by inspecting a layer using Figma Scope. Right-click on a layer on the left-hand panel, then click on Inspect in FigmaScope (it’s near the bottom of the popup menu, so you might need to scroll). In the middle panel, expand editInfo and you’ll see a createdAt Unix timestamp and lastEditAt Unix timestamp. If you copy and paste those into a Unix timestamp convert (there are a number of these if you search Google), it will tell you what time the layer was created and when it was last edited.

Let me know if you have any questions!
