I am new to Figma. When I first started, the toolbar was at the top of the screen, but now it’s at the bottom. Why did this happen, and how can I change it back?

Hello @Leigh5, Thank you for getting in touch. I understand your confusion.

It seems that you meet UI3, which is Figma’s new UI. Don’t worry, you have the option to switch back to UI2 (the previous UI) to support your transition.

To revert to the previous UI, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. When you open a design file, you will notice a (?) icon in the bottom right corner of the file.
  2. Click on the icon, which will open the Help and resources menu.
  3. Within that menu, you will find the option “Go back to the previous UI.”

At the moment, it is not possible to customize the toolbar placement, but it would be a valuable feature to have. If this interests you, there is an idea from another community member that you might find intriguing at: Allow us to dock/move the new UI3 toolbar. Feel free to explore it at your convenience.

Thank you once again for reaching out!

Since this update, the Figma tool bar is often getting lost with the mac dock, making it much harder to configure windows as needed and still access controls. Agreed, customizing placement might help 🙂

No one wanted this lol stop mucking with things that don’t need to change and fix things that are broken

The new UI3 is amazing, but I have to agree with many others, the toolbar should not be at the bottom! There should be an option to fix to the top or have it as a floating toolbar where it can be dragged to a convenient place!

I’ve seen a message saying UI2 is being deprecated.

I’m using an external monitor and the bottom tool bar is obstructed by my laptop screen peering over the bottom of the external monitor. I had to switch back to UI2 in order to use Figma without breaking my neck peering forward over the top of the laptop every few minutes!

Can anyone let me know if Figma have enabled an option to move the tool bar yet? I know I’m not the only person with this issue. I’ve spoken to a number of designers that express the same frustration.
