I am trying to set up a small variable system with responsive behavior for my team. The feature with the adaptive modes is really interesting.

In this example, I am trying to add padding to the desktop 'Infocard'. As you can see, it works within the frames, so no matter where I drop the component, Figma automatically uses the correct component instance.

The problem: In the Infocard component itself, I can assign the correct mode to each instance via the Appearance panel, but this breaks the automatic ‘drag-and-drop’ functionality.
