I can confirm that to restore the component to a non-component state, you have to create an instance then detach the instance. This workaround is to safeguard the main component.
In the meantime, others in the community have created a plugin to delete unused components here: https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/746849770992339499/safely-delete-components Hope it helps!
