Native variable export feature

During Figma Schema 2025 they announced upcoming support for extended variable collections and native variable export/import conforming with the DTCG token specification.

It was announced during this session: 


Here is a screenshot of what they were proposing:



An update to the app dropped a few days ago with extended collections but I cannot find how to export variables to JSON (without using a plugin).

I don’t have the “Export modes” option in my dropdown menu, even with our Enterprise account.

Has anyone got that feature and how do you do it?

    I have the same issue. I see the new variable overview. I am able to extend my collections but I am not able to export modes. Please help!

      Is there any update on this, we are now almost a working week into Decemeber and I still do not see this option.

        It looks like we have the same issue, we only got the extended collections earlier this week but upon trying to export a mode we realised that we couldn’t. I found one other similar thread but no explanation or resolution yet. Seems like it’s going to be a waiting game.

          I’ve heard from a Figma design advocate that it’s being rolled out over the next week. So we’ll have to hang in there a little longer 😮‍💨

          Okay great thanks Monique! Hopefully we can have it before the end of the year 😂

            I did see that the note that Nellya shared above has been removed from the Figma help page.

            But we are still waiting for variable export as well.

              Sorry for the confusion, ​@Jonathan_Ellis! 

              While the note was removed, it’s still being rolled out. Keep refreshing your tabs, and it will hopefully roll out to your account soon.

                    Recently got access to the Extended Collection features…

                    Why does the DTCG based export feature NOT include “description”?! It is part of the DTCG spec and is part of the variables Details panel in Figma so why would this be omitted?

                    Exactly this. Was excited to see the export feature popping up, but this really makes its potential (especially AI/Agentic Coding related) less useful.
