Mobile variants showing Desktop size - Preferred value fix?

I have combined variants for headline and text for mobile as sm, md, lg and desktop as xs, sm, md, and lg.

When I have mobile selected it shows lg even though that is part of the desktop. I read something about fixing this with Preferred Values but I don’t know how to do this.
