Question

Master component is not editable

I keep running into instances where I am on a master component layer and it won’t let me make edits to it. I have made sure that it is in fact the master component and that all layers are unlocked. What am I missing?

If you’re unable to edit a Master component in Figma, there could be a few reasons why:

  1. The Master component may be locked in the source file. Check the source file to see if the Master component is locked. If it is, unlock it and try editing it again.

  2. You might not be able to update the master component if it’s a shared library component because it’s designed to be a reusable shared asset.

  3. The layer is inside a nested component: In this case, you must change the nested component as a whole rather than the specific layer included inside it.

But then what is the point of making it a component if you can’t update it?
