Is it possible to move a library to another team's project without losing its connections?

Michael D.

Hi. We’ve built a large design library in our company’s organization account, inside one team and project. Now, we want to move this library to a dedicated “design system” team and project so it’s easier to manage and share across all departments (other Figma teams).

Some teams are already using components from this library. Is it possible to move the library:

a) to a different team, or
b) to a different project within the same team
… without breaking or detaching the existing component links in other files?

Thanks for any help!

Hiya!

Yes, you should be able to move a Figma library file to another team within the same org without breaking component instances — as long as you're careful about a few things:

  • Make sure the new team has access to the file (ideally with Edit or View rights).

  • Re-publish the library after moving it so others can continue to use it.

  • In any files using the library, double-check that the library is still enabled under Assets → Libraries.

  • Instances should stay intact, but if anything looks off, you can use the Swap Library feature to relink.

If you run into issues with the migration of the library, please fill out a support ticket here, and someone will get back to you with specifics: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360005944714
