How do I change the layout of an existing slide in Figma Slides?

I can’t figure out how to change the layout of an existing slide in Figma Slides. When creating a new slide, I can choose a layout from the theme, but once the slide is added, I can’t find a way to switch it to a different layout.

Am I missing something? Often, I realize later that a different layout would work better and want to apply one of the theme’s template layouts to an existing slide—but I don’t see an option to do that. The only option I can find is “Template Style,” which seems to change only text styles and colors, not the layout itself.

Is there a way to reapply or change slide layouts after a slide has been created?

@djv thanks for your reply. The ability to choose a new/different layout for a slide is especially important when importing an unformatted slide deck into Figma slides. I imported a slide deck into Figma slides this week and had to use the process you described to recreate each slide (25 slides) and it was a painful experience! I would not want to use Figma slides for deck imports again without the ability to choose a new layout per slide or change the deck theme.

Hey @Shelene_Lee1, thanks for reaching out!

It is not possible to change a Slide’s layout after it’s been created, but you can add a new slide template from your chosen Template by adding a New slide from template. You’ll see a tooltip appear when hovering over New slide. Then, you can select a different Slide layout from that template.

I’ve updated this topic into a feature request and passed along this feedback to the Slides team for future consideration to make this process more frictionless. But in the meantime, I hope this temporary solution helps!

You’re welcome, @Shelene_Lee1

And I hear you with this. I’ll pass this feedback onto our Slides team as well. We appreciate it.

This is a very basic functionality, and the lack of it is actually the only reason for me not to get the Professional subscription :(

Hi!

This doc implies this is possible, but the Template Style isn’t a dropdown for me. Does that mean it’s coming soon?

Hi @Melanie P, thanks for chiming in here!

Just to clarify what you’re trying to achieve, choosing a new template style will only changes the current template’s text styles and color fills on the current slide. It won’t change the layout of the existing template, which was the original goal of this forum topic.

But if you are just trying to change your current template’s text styles and color fills, the Template Style dropdown will only appear once you have two or more Template styles to choose from, as shown in the GIF in the Help Center article. Hope this helps explain, but please let me know if you have any further questions.
