How do AI credits work when editor seats are transferred mid-billing cycle?

I have a question about AI credits usage when editor seats are transferred during a monthly billing cycle.

Currently, we use a fixed number of editor seats in our account. When someone moves off a project, we remove or downgrade their editor license and assign that editor seat to someone else. So in practice, the seat is being transferred from one person to another within the same billing cycle.

I wanted to understand how AI credits behave in this scenario.

For example:

  • Our monthly billing cycle includes 3,000 AI credits per editor seat
  • Person A has an editor seat and uses 1,000 credits in the first 10 days
  • On day 11, Person A is moved to a viewer seat or removed from the team
  • Person B is then added as an editor using that same available seat

In this case, does Person B get:

  1. The remaining 2,000 credits for that seat/month, since 1,000 were already used by Person A
  2. A fresh 3,000 credits, because Person B is a new editor
  3. A prorated credit amount based on the remaining days in the billing cycle
  4. Some other account-level/shared-credit behavior?

Basically, are AI credits tied to the seat, the individual user, or the workspace/account billing cycle?

Any clarification would be helpful, especially for teams where editor seats are frequently reassigned across projects.

Thanks for confirming, @Bala_Sivagnanam - stepping in for @djv. The new person should get the default credit amount that Professional members with a full seat receive. Note that if you upgrade the old user again (by re-assigning the newly open seat or another new seat), their limit is not reset unless it’s been long enough for their credit limit to have reset anyway. If you’d like more specific information, let us know and we’ll help get you in touch with our support team.

Hey @Bala_Sivagnanam, thanks for reaching out about this!

Totally understandable to want clarity on this, especially when your team regularly reassigns seats throughout the month. AI credits in Figma are tied to the individual user's editor seat, not to the seat slot itself. When a user is downgraded or removed from an editor seat mid-cycle, their remaining credits for that period are not transferred to the next person. The incoming editor receives their own fresh credit allocation. Though the exact amount (full grant vs. prorated) can depend on a few factors, like your plan type and when in the billing cycle the new seat is activated.

To make sure we point you to the most accurate answer for your specific setup, could you share a couple of details?

  • Are you on a Pro, Organization, or Enterprise plan?
  • Are the editor seats being reassigned manually by an Admin or through a different workflow?

In the meantime, your Admin can check current credit usage per user from the AI credits section in the Admin panel. That should give you a real-time view of where things stand for each seat. If anything looks off after a reassignment, our support team would be the best next step to investigate further. Happy to help connect you, if needed!
