How can I show variables in other Figma files?

I created a color system using variables, then published the file and applied it to another file.
The connection works fine, but when I click on variables it shows up empty.

Is going back to the original file the only way to view the connected variables or styles? 

(Would like to see the organized variables at once in the connected file as well.)
