Elianna

Hello,

We are planning to transfer a project from one company to another.

The previous company that has been working on this project is planning to deactivate the account that holds admin privileges for the organization containing the project. They also mentioned that the domain associated with the admin account will be deactivated.

I think that the organization itself needs to be transferred as-is in order to preserve existing comments and maintain library connections.

Although we have already changed the owner of the projects within the organization to the new party taking over, we have not been able to change the admin of the organization itself.

  1. If the domain of the admin account is deactivated, will the projects within that organization also be deleted?

  2. If the organization is deactivated, is there any way to transfer or change the admin of that organization?

Hi @Elianna, thanks for reaching out!

To change the Admin in a Figma Organization, an existing Organization Admin must navigate to the Admin panel, select the People tab, find the desired member, and select Grant admin access from the menu. Then, to revoke admin rights from the previous Admin, they can select Revoke admin access from the same menu.

To specifically answer your questions, even if you are not able to change the Organization Admin…

  • No. Projects within a Figma Organization are not deleted if an Admin account is deactivated or deleted. Figma typically retains the files for 30 days for retrieval, after which they may be permanently deleted.
    • If a team had only the deactivated Admin as an owner, that team becomes "ownerless." It remains accessible to other members, and org admins can reassign ownership.
    • Any drafts in the deleted user's personal space are moved to an "Unassigned" tab within the Admin panel rather than being deleted, allowing for easy recovery.
  • Yes. Existing team admins or organization admins can claim ownership of the now "ownerless" projects and teams.

It sounds like you’ve already started the process, but it is highly recommended that the current Admin transfer ownership of all critical teams and projects to the new active Admin, before their account is deactivated.

  • If an admin account is deactivated, it is vital to have another admin in place or contact Figma support to help transfer ownership.

Hope this helps clarify!
