Gradient handle colors are wrong

Question

When I am finally able to make the gradient handle show (extremely counter-intuitive to get there), it has the wrong colors and the wrong direction. And when I press “rotate gradient” it applies those wrong colors from the gradient handle to the object itself. Is this a bug, or am I using this wrong?

Figured it out. Had to detach the style but I still think the gradient should default to the color style gradient if you have set one, and not be associated more deeply with the object in the way it is currently, but you may dismiss my complaint as that of a novice user.
