Figma fades or blurs side UI panels to direct your attention to the main design canvas. It’s a common UX pattern in creative tools to reduce distraction.
When your mouse is not on the panel, Figma assumes you're not using it, so it de-emphasizes it.
As soon as you move your cursor over it, it becomes fully opaque and interactive again.
A subtle blur or dim effect can give a cleaner, less overwhelming look especially on large screens or complex projects.
Figma does not provide a built-in option to disable this behavior. It’s part of their interface design.
If you find it distracting or less accessible:
Keep the panel focused by clicking on it – even if your mouse leaves, it may stay active for some actions.
Use keyboard shortcuts to access tools instead of relying on mouse hover (e.g., Shift + R to toggle rulers, Alt + 1/2/3 to switch between tabs).
