Question

Figma App is not Smooth.

I recently upgraded my laptop to an NVIDIA 5070 (8GB model), hoping to resolve the performance issues I had with my old 3060 (4GB), which I assumed was struggling to handle Figma.

Unfortunately, the upgrade hasn’t helped yet. I’ve tried enabling the High Performance GPU option for Figma in both Windows and NVIDIA settings, and I’ve explored almost every solution I could find online. At this point, I’m starting to think the issue is Figma itself.

Figma has never felt like a truly smooth experience for me; there is always a choppy feeling to the app, like a bit of a "Frankenstein’s Monster." Recently, however, that drag has felt even more intense. To see what I mean, try changing colors using the color picker in the Variables panel or running a Smart Animate transition with a large dataset.

Can someone please tell me if I’m missing something? Is there a hidden "magical switch" in the setup to smoothen the experience? Because let’s be honest—Figma isn't a free app anymore, and it shouldn't feel this heavy.

Hey @Ajaya_Bajracharya - apologies on the performance issues.

To touch on a few things -- I want to acknowledge that some of my suggestions are based off of assumptions, so please correct me if I have misunderstood anything.

At the root, I think there’s still a memory factor here, disregarding the specs of your laptop. You mentioned an example:

changing colors using the color picker in the Variables panel or running a Smart Animate transition with a large dataset.

How large as the files you working with when you say large data set? Are there a lot of frames, heavier auto-layout, etc? Do you ever see any kind of memory usage notification pop up telling you that memory is running low? This would help clarify things

Every browser has its own active memory limit. This can differ across devices, but the general understanding is there's an active memory limit of 2GB per browser tab.

This help page may help give you some understanding on what may be part of the experience: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040528173-Reduce-memory-usage-in-file

With all of that said, we are actively working on improving the functionality of Figma, and I’d like to make sure someone on our technical quality team can review your feedback. They may be able to provide you additional suggestions, or clarify better than I can.

I’ll follow up with you via PM to grab more info - please lookout for it!

@ksn
I am using the dedicated Figma app.

changing colors using the color picker in the Variables panel or running a Smart Animate transition with a large dataset.

I will have to disagree, Unless you do not use color picker in variables.

Color picker in variables

And for this,

How large as the files you working with when you say large datasets?

→ Imagine a design system of a Sales management with accurate data and all the pages linked to each other, specially navigation.

Addition to Main Post.

Is it possible that the Figma application undergoes continuous background updates during active use? I have observed sporadic, minor irregularities occurring intermittently. For instance, I am currently experiencing an issue with the alignment selector tool. Previously, it functioned without error; however, the alignment pop-up menu now remains persistently open, obstructing access to the rotation and flip functionalities. If this is the case, is there an option to opt out of these updates, such as disabling beta releases? Could someone direct me to the location of this setting?

Hey @Ajaya_Bajracharya - thanks for the additional context. When I do testing, I do so with some assumptions that don’t necessarily line up with how your work is designed/organized, so I recognize that I’m probably not hitting the same pain points as you.

At this time, my best recommendation is to have someone on our technical quality team look again with your update.

I just sent you an email - please let me know if you do not receive it.
