Hi all — looking for clarity on Figma file URL behavior when moving files between workspaces.
Scenario:
-
I am the owner of a Figma design file.
-
The file currently lives in a workspace where I am not a member (I have direct access to the file).
-
I want to move the file into another workspace where I am an admin.
-
I am moving the file, not duplicating it.
-
The file is linked from external tools (e.g., Asana) using frame-level links (
node-id).
Question:
When moving a file to a different workspace:
-
Does the file’s canonical URL / file key change?
-
Do existing frame-level links (
node-idlinks) continue to work? -
Is link breakage only expected if frames are deleted/recreated or the file is duplicated?
I’ve tested this with a sample file and observed that the file key and node-id remain the same, but I’ve seen conflicting guidance about whether moving a file across workspaces creates a “new URL.”
Would appreciate confirmation from anyone who’s done this in production or has insight into how Figma handles file identity during workspace moves.
Thanks in advance!
