Dev mode - finding and exporting the correct layer(s) takes way too long

I am a Webflow developer and have used Figma pretty consistently for 2 years. However, I am by no means a Figma expert. I’m pretty green.

BUT… I’ve found it very challenging / annoying for a while now how painful it is to select a layer/group/frame, find the right one, etc. The most troubling is that when I am in dev mode, MOST of the time when I click on an element in the canvas …. then the Layers Panel on the left does not move at all to correspond with where I am on the canvas. How can this be? It just wastes a lot of time.

If I EXIT dev mode, then the Layers Panel on the left moves correspondingly & immediately when I click elements on the canvas. This is expected behavior and Dev Mode should do the same.

As a developer, I find Figma to be pretty frustrating at times UX-wise. Do other devs agree?

Hi @dreweastmead, Thanks for reaching out about this!

Are you experiencing an issue where, in Dev Mode, clicking an object on the canvas doesn't highlight it in the Layers panel? I've tested this on my end and haven't been able to reproduce the problem. It sounds like the tool isn't working as expected, as you mentioned.

To help us understand the issue better, could you please let us know:

  • Are you experiencing this in the desktop app, in a supported browser (like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge), or in both?
  • Does this occur with all of your files or only with specific ones?

We'd also appreciate it if you could try these basic troubleshooting steps:

  • Close any Figma tabs you're not actively using, then:
  • Browser: Completely close your browser and then reopen Figma in a new window.
  • Desktop App: Completely close and restart the Figma desktop app.
  • Clear the cache for your app or browser.

If the above steps do not resolve your issue, we recommend that you contact support directly and investigate your case further here: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001744374
When you submit, please provide the following information:

  • Your Figma account email
  • Share URL of  the example file and add  support-share@figma.com as an Editor to the file (this won't affect your billing at all)
  • a screen recording showcasing this behavior with the whole window in frame

Thanks again for your assistance!
