Binding Variables to Variants post UI Update

Hello Community! 

I’m working on the Advanced Prototyping Playground community file, learning how to bind variants to string variables… The instructions seem easy enough, though they were created using the old UI, but for the life of me I just can’t get the interaction to work properly... 

Has anyone recently tried and succeeded in this exercise? 

Here is the community file, the frame is called “Try binding these variants.”
