Alternative to Copy as PNG

Right now I am using this workflow:

1. Create a grey rectangle
2. Press copy on a image
3. SHIFT+COMMAND+V on the rectangle to fit the image on the rectangle.

Problem is I keep getting the error “image was too large for the clipboard”.

So i am looking for a way to just quickly fit the original image inside the rectangle but without copying it as PNG first.

Is that possible?
