Accidentally verified new account for Education Plan instead of personal account – Any workarounds to transfer status?

Hi everyone,

I’m in a bit of a tricky situation and hoping someone here has gone through something similar and found a workaround.

I recently decided to apply for the Figma Education plan. However, I didn’t realize I could just upgrade my existing personal account.

Instead, I accidentally created a brand new Figma account using my university email and successfully verified my student status on that new account.

My dilemma is that all my existing work, assets, and active preview links are on my personal account. Because I’m already verified on the university email, I can’t simply re-verify my personal account without hitting a "Verification Limit Exceeded" error via SheerID.

Has anyone successfully navigated this? Specifically, I'm looking to find out:

  1. Is there any hidden method or specific support channel to transfer the SheerID verification status over to my main personal account?

  2. If transferring the status is strictly impossible, what is your workflow for managing a separate student "Pro" account and a personal "Free" account without breaking existing share/editable links?

  3. How do you handle the transition when you graduate and lose access to the university email, ensuring no projects are lost?

Any advice, workarounds, or tips from the community would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey @kavindu lakshan, thanks for reaching out!

Here's how this breaks down for each of your questions:

  1. Moving the SheerID verification itself isn't something we're able to do. Once education status is applied to an account, it stays there and can't move to a different one.
Figma can't move status from an account with an educational email to an account with a personal email address, so the correction form won't be able to help in this case. On top of that, SheerID limits each person to one verification per year, so trying to verify your personal account right now likely triggered the "Verification Limit Exceeded" message you saw, since this year's verification already went to your new account.
  2. Since the status is staying on your new account, the simplest path is bringing your existing work over to that account rather than keeping two in sync. Once you've created or upgraded a team on your new account to the Education plan, you can transfer a folder from your personal account straight into that team. Any plan can send a folder, and since Education teams run on Professional-level access, that should be enough to receive one. A couple of things worth knowing: Full steps here: Transfer a folder or team to a different account.
    • Your existing file and prototype links keep working after the transfer, only the folder or team itself gets a new link.
    • If it's just a file or two, saving a local copy and importing it into the other account is even quicker.
  3. For the eventual graduation transition: education status is valid for one year, with the option to reverify if you're still eligible. If it lapses, teams with three or fewer files convert automatically to a free Starter team, you keep editing as normal. Teams with four or more files get locked until you bring the file count down or upgrade, though you can still download or move files out at any time, even while locked. Worth moving or duplicating anything important well ahead of time so you're not caught off guard. Details are in our Figma for Education article, under "Updates to verification process."

Let me know if anything here doesn't match what you're seeing, or if you have any further questions!
