Why did figma remove "Link to selection" option in the share panel?

Luandre_Odendaal

There used to be a radio button that you could click and it would take someone to the selection immediately after sharing the link. I recently updated my Figma and now the option is just gone.

Hi there! We have made some changes. It is now selecting the frame by default if you have a frame selected.
To clarify, you just have to click the ‘Copy link’ button when you have a top-level frame selected, if will copy the link to that frame now.

Hi there!

Does this work even if it’s a section? I’ve been having no luck copying a link to a specific section. Upon opening, it just goes to the first project file page, which isn’t what I want.

Hey @Austin_Wilhelm ,
You should be able to do that.

Please follow these steps here:

Hope this helps!

I came looking for a fix myself! Share> Copy Link used to land me on a frame or section just fine. Now it defaults to Main File, Cover Page. I suspected it had something to do with Branches or permissions because it works fine on files I own or started myself.

Strangely, using Ctrl+L on any selection works as expected, even files I don’t own. Perhaps its a bug. Hope that helps!

Hey there - thanks for these details! I’d like our support team to investigate the issue as you have founded an issue specifically with the Branches. Please reach out directly by filling this form: here
Be sure to use your Figma account email, include a link to the file where you have your Branches, and share it with support-share@figma.com, so we can investigate further. Thank you!

I’m also experiencing the same issue.
When I copy link to a selected section or frame it goes to the cover page.

Hey Figma Support, hoping to revive this thread. AFAICT, there is no longer the ability to share a link that will take the recipient to a very specific element or section of a larger frame. Even with the video you shared from Feb 2024, there is no “Copy link” option in the menu anymore (screenshot below)

From one Product Manager to Figma PMs: this feature is incredibly valuable to bring someones attention to a specific area of the Figma file, which allows our teams to operate more effectively and efficiently as we are a mix of in-office and virtual teammates. Please bring back this functionality!

Thank you.

Hey @Taylor_Lazarowitz, sorry to hear this is happening!

It’s hard to tell exactly what the issue is without seeing your entire canvas. Have you tried using the Copy link to selection shortcut?

Can you also try clicking the Share button then Copy link to Share to selection?

Radley_Marx

I think the issue is that Copy link to selection may be broken for Sections.

If you link to a specific Section, it will only work for the person who created the link. Any outside links will direct to the first Section on the page.

When I tested it on my end, the “Copy link to selection” feature seemed to work as expected. Could you share a video recording so I can better understand the issue?

Alternatively, you can submit a bug report using this link:

Thanks for your patience!
