Question

A file disappeared from my account

Hi,

I have lost an important file on Figma and I can’t find the file in any of my projects section or in the deleted section. It just disappeared completely and when I tried to access it through a past link, I am getting the following message:

You can’t access this resource Contact the owner, an admin, or support for assistance. (Screenshot attached).

I have a ton of my work in it and the file is very important to my work. I hope you could help me retrieve it.

Thank you in advance,

Was this file in a team that you owned? or Owned by another?
Have you deleted any teams recently where that file may have been a draft?
Check your email for teams that may have been deleted, it can be restored from there.

Conversely, there is a ‘deleted’ tab in the drafts of your teams, you will be able to find deleted files there.

No, it wasn’t a file in a team and it wasn’t in the deleted section either. I didn’t delete the file. I think maybe a bug in the “drafts to move” update on Figma or some other reason might have been the reason it disappeared. And I have checked my emails to see if there are any teams deleted and nothing there too. Can the backend see or have the names of all the design files I created, deleted or moved somewhere. Maybe that can help what happened to the file.

Hey @Vishnu_CHAMAKURI ,
Thanks for the details! This look odd. 🤔 I’ve redirected you to the support team, so they can investigate it further. You should have received an email from me via your Figma email account (vxxxxxxxxxxxxxi@yxxoo.com). Please respond to the email with a URL of the file, so that they may be able to locate your file. Thank you!

Hi Celine @Celine_Figma, I have a similar issue. My file has disappeared. I am the only file owner, and I didn’t delete my file. In the delete section there is no file. I have the URL to the file and when I try to load it, I get this on display “Hmm, we couldn’t find that one. This file may have been deleted, moved, or made unavailable. Try reaching out to the file owner.” I have a screenshot of the display. I really appreciate any assistance in recovering this file.

Hey Henry, sorry to hear it’s also happening! I’ve connected you with the support team via email. Please share to them the URL of the missing file so they can take a closer look at what might be happening. You can search for the link in your browser’s history, or ask collaborators who may have it. (I send you an email via your Figma email account : yixxxxxxy@gxxxl.com, ticket number: 1068042)

To give you some clarity this page indicates that something has changed about your permission to view this file.

In the meantime, can you also make sure you have logged into the right account to view it? You can switch accounts via the top-right and top-left corners of the file browser.

The file may have been moved by a teammate who was also on that file – please check with your teammate if you are able to.

I am having a similar issue with a file I created, and I’m the only one with access to it, it’s displaying this error message "If you expected to see a file here you may not have permission to access it. Please ask the owner to update the file permissions and try again.

"

Hey @liza2471 , welcome to the community!
This page indicates that something has changed about your permission to view this file – you may not be logged into the right account to view it, it has been deleted, or it has been moved somewhere that you can’t access.

Can you please check first if:

  • The file is in your deleted folder (Open your drafts > click the deleted page). If so, right-click the file to restore it
  • The file may have been moved by a teammate who was also on that file
  • You’re logged into a Figma account that should have access to this file. You can switch accounts via the top-right and top-left corners of the file browser.

If you still haven’t found it, please reach out directly to the support team by filling this form: here
Please use your Figma email account, and please incluse a link to the file so the team can check on its state and location. You can grab the url in the desktop app by right-clicking the open tab → Copy link.

For more troubleshooting tips, I recommend reviewing our Help Center guide on how to troubleshoot this: Files not opening I hope this helps!

Just lost my file my a lot of my new works. It was in no teams. I was literally working on this file past 1 hour, and when I change Tab to go to another file and come back, I get the 404 error.

IS there any way to resolve it ?

Hey @Abhijit, sorry to hear this happened!

Since you mentioned that the file was not in a team, were you the owner of this file or was it shared with you by another user?

We made Updates to how drafts work back in June. Any drafts that you had to move after some time would have been placed in a free Starter Team.

Do you have a direct link or the name of the missing file? We can try to track it down on the backend with more info.

Hi there! The exact issue described has happened to me. I was working on a project that I originally owned, as I designed it in my account. After sharing the link with the team, my account automatically logged out, and the file disappeared from my profile. Strangely, I lost ownership of my own file and had to request editor access from the team admin. This has also occurred with two other projects. Could you please look into what’s happening and help resolve this issue?

Hey @Ana_Borges, sorry to hear this happened!

I took a look at the Figma account associated with the email address of your Forum account, and it looks like you’re the owner of two teams: “Ana Borges’s team” and
“Topflight Apps”.

Do you have a direct URL link or the name of the missing file? We can try to track it down on the backend with more info.

Project name is DyadSync _ App and have this message near my user name “Ana Borges (ana@xxxx.com)'s deleted drafts”

Thanks for the info, @Ana_Borges!

I was able to locate the file here.

As mentioned above, we made Updates to how drafts work back in June. Any drafts that you had to move after some time would have been placed in a free Starter Team.

With that said, please check the “Deleted” section of your “Drafts to Move” folder:

It sounds like this is where your file was recently placed, because your file is still not within a Team.

Of course. Please help us out. This is a big issue now. The filename should be OneDeck if I remember correctly.

Thanks, @Eli_Sulim!

It looks like this file was trashed when the team that it was in (Lexington) was trashed on September 26th. It looks like you were the owner of this team, so you should have received an email with a restore link. All you need to do is restore the team, and you should regain access to the file.

If you’d still prefer to delete the Lexington team, just move your drafts and files into another team, before deleting it again.

Thank you! I have no idea how this file ended in this team. )
