Question

Issue with expanding frames in components in prototype.

Deanna_A

Hi. I’m having an issue with issue with frames that are meant to expand or “hug content” when switching between variants of different sizes. I don’t know what technical issue is causing this probably but I was able to verify it is something happening with Figma itself, and not my prototype, auto layout settings, etc. This is happening across multiple different components and only started happening today - however reverting my file version back to when I knew the prototype was working correctly did not correct the issue. But a developer that had never signed into Figma before opened the most recent prototype (without any changes) and did not experience the issue.

For these particular designs it seems almost like the drop shadow is expanding like it should but the frame itself just isn’t. I have tried changing my components both to hug content and to fixed width and height just to further confirm it wasn’t something I was doing, but neither changes the outcome on my end or the developer’s. Doesn’t work on my screen, works on his, both ways.

Unexpanded view
Expanded view - What it should look like (and what my developer sees):
Expanded view - What it looks like on my end, both browser and desktop app.

Full screen expanded view - What it should look like (and what my developer sees):
Full screen expanded view - What it looks like on my end, both browser and desktop app.

I just started having this exact issue...were you able to resolve it? If I manually switch the variant, it works fine, but in prototype mode, it’s doing what you described...content of the expanded variant is being revealed, but the surrounding container doesn’t resize.

This exact thing started happening to me today as well. For folks on the team, using the prototype is fine, for me (and a few others) switching between variants keeps the height of the original variant.

Things I’ve tried:

  • Resetting Figma
  • Using both web and desktop versions
  • About everything else I can think of

There are some components in my file that work as expected, and like @Jason H. if I swap the variant on the art board it works, but Hug is being ignored in the prototype. Even fixed height is being ignored.

Saw in another thread that it’s an issue tied to a specific user account. Sure even if I log out or view the prototype on a different user it works as expected. Obviously not an acceptable solution as building anything is unreliable.

I'm having the same problem, has anyone found a solution or received feedback from the Figma support team?

I just wanted to chime in and say this issue appears resolved after a Mac OS software update. I still want to keep the thread open because I don’t have any word on what caused it to begin with and I don’t know if it will resurface.

But for those experiencing this issue maybe check for OS updates and see if you have any luck?

Was able to talk to support yesterday and a change was rolled back which fixed things.
