Question

Shocking drop in gradient quality since last update

Elena_Dimova
Gradient Quality Before Update on a 5x Smaller File
Gradient Quality After Update on a 5x Bigger File

Hi all,
I’m experiencing some issues with PDF exports for gradients for nearly a month. I attached some examples for export comparison October 2024/January 2025. No matter how the PDF is exported or the design, the same issue persists.

There is severe dithering and quality loss, which has never happened before. Is there a solution for this, because I can’t seem to fix it and it’s damaging our work with clients, because we can’t export a single slide from a presentation properly if it’s not all flat colors.

Would really appreciate some help.

Hey @Elena_Dimova, thank you for reaching out! I understand how frustrating it must be to face ongoing issues with PDF exports, especially when it impacts your work with clients.

I saw you've already submitted a support ticket (#1227677). The team has recommended a few steps to try, which may help improve the quality of your exports:

  1. PDF Export Quality: By default, PDFs export at medium quality in Figma. You can adjust the quality settings to improve the output. To do this, go to the Export section in the right sidebar and change the quality setting to a higher level: Export formats and settings

  2. (If on Mobile) Missing Elements on Phone: The issue with missing elements might be related to how the PDF is being rendered on your phone. Ensure that all elements are within the export frame and that no layers are hidden or locked. Additionally, check if the blend modes used in your design are supported in PDF exports, as some blend modes like "Plus darker" and "Plus lighter" are not supported.

If the issue persists, please follow up directly on your support ticket so we can continue investigating and provide further assistance. We truly appreciate your patience and want to help resolve this as quickly as possible.

Hi Gayani,
Thank you for your response but it does not seem to solve my issue at all.
As mentioned in my initial inquiry:

No matter how the PDF is exported or the design, the same issue persists.

The examples I shared are with the "high quality" export setting and are with really low quality on the gradient. Same file 2 months apart. The only thing that’s changing is the huge file size, without any improvement on the quality.

These are examples from another file. Extreme dithering.

No blending modes used, there’s no difference when the image is flattened to a png and then used as background and when the gradient is a vector. The issue is the same.

Hey @Elena_Dimova, thank you for following up and providing more details—I understand your frustration. I’ve shared your concerns with the support team and can see they’ve requested the file links to investigate further. Providing those links will help us get to the root of the issue more quickly.

We truly appreciate your patience, and I’ll keep an eye on this to ensure it gets resolved as soon as possible. Let us know if there’s anything else we can do in the meantime!

There’s no frustration, just looking to resolve this and possibly open a discussion in the forum if someone experienced this issue.

I provided a link when I initially submitted the ticket 2 days ago, but I did it again today. It seems there’s quite the delay in all responses and not enough attention to the provided information.

I hope there’s a way to resolve this soon and the full submission to be read and handled properly.

Thanks for following up, and I truly appreciate your patience. I understand how important this is, and I’m sorry for any delays you’ve experienced. I can see that your ticket is being processed (#1227677), and you received a response yesterday. If there’s anything else I can do to help or clarify, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Has this been sorted out? I’m having the same issue. No matter the export settings, no matter the colors or the design style - as long as it’s a gradient there’s an issue. Attaching two examples of the same export, one in JPG (good) and the second on in PDF (horrible compression).

Hey @Kamil Dabrowski, thank you for reaching out! I’ve taken a look in the previous ticket and it looks like our engineering team is still looking into the users problem.

Could you let me know what PDF viewer app you are using and having the issue in? One recommendation the user got from our engineering team is to use a non-Chrome PDF viewer as a workaround.

Let me know if you’re experiencing this issue also on a non-Chrome PDF viewer, happy to help out further!

Thank you,

Gayani

Yes, it looks good in Adobe Acrobat and Edge browser. But almost everyone that I’d like to send a PDF uses Mozilla or Chrome as their default PDF viewer.

Hey everyone, I’ve got great news! We’ve made improvements to SVG exports. If you're using angular or diamond gradients or applying background blur effects, you can now export or copy those objects as SVGs, and they’ll render properly on the web and beyond. Check out our latest updates in the Figma release notes: https://www.figma.com/release-notes/. Let us know if you're still running into issues!

Kamil Dabrowski

Thanks Gayani, but for PDF exports the issue remains unfortunately.
