Changing the location of annotations on the sheet

It would be a great idea to add the ability to move annotations (сhanging the place). Right now, they’re fixed in place and can overlap other elements. And you cannot change it.
What I mean is the ability to reposition an annotation freely while keeping the link to the target object intact.
Annotations are a really useful feature—thank you! Previously, I had to create similar functionality using my own objects.

Please do not move this offer to another discussion. 🙏
Can we move the Figma Annotations (in dev mode) from one Figma project to another?
These are different questions.

+1, annotations are great but with auto-positioning they quickly create a mess

It is not a nice sight looking at annotations stacked on top of eachother when a simple top, bottom left right positioning would easily resolve that problem. Does not even have to be automatic, can be manual completely :)

+1 this is driving me nuts

Chris_Leckie

Agree completely. I was really excited to see this launch but the lack of positioning has really hindered adoption.

Just a simple top, right, bottom, left option would avoid this.

plus,

It would be nice to be able to leave annotations on sections or frames, in addition to positions.

+1, can’t move annotations around when they cover important stuff

First of all, thank you to the Figma team for introducing the new annotation feature, it's incredibly helpful for collaboration. However, I’ve noticed an issue:

“The annotations are always fixed in one position on the frame or element and cannot be moved or repositioned freely.”

This becomes a problem when the annotation covers up important UI elements or text that I need to view or edit. It would be great if annotations could float along the edge of the screen, or have options like "dock to edge" or "auto reposition" to avoid overlapping key design content.

Making annotations more flexible in positioning would greatly improve usability without sacrificing their core purpose.

Thanks for listening, and I hope the team considers this improvement! 💡

Dykas_Dann_164

They have the potential to be useful but the fixed location make them more of a hindrance than a benefit at this point.

Holly_Koskinen

Agree. Love the idea and categorization of annotations, however not being able to move them around is a problem. Also having the ability to add more color options would be great too OR being able to set a standard of colors for teams to utilize across for them.

I second this opinion. It used to be that annotations only showed for the frame that was selected which made it easy to hide them away when you are going through designs and while working. Now the way its always visible its really annoying that you have to actively press shift-y to hide them all.

Agree. The old annotations behavior was much better and stayed out of the way. This new design creates such a mess so quickly...

If it took 4 years just to get horizontal scrolling in the layers panel, I’m not sure this feature’s coming anytime before I retire. 🤣

+1 please
I’m having a horrible experience having annotations fly around all over my designs

Axel_RocketMoney

The inability to reposition and not block/overlap content makes annotations almost unusable.

Yes you can show/hide the annotation, but if you’re trying to look at the thing the annotation is referencing, having that same annotation cover the content is pretty annoying.

The simple ability to click and drag the position of where the annotation content sits would be very helpful
