It would be great if the professional plan offered more than 4 variable modes. Right now I want to set up a mode for each component size-- XS - XL, 5 sizes all together-- which puts me over the 4 limit for pro, but well under the 40 limit for enterprise, which is a quantity I will never need. And there’s no use case for enterprise at all for a team our size.
I think 10-12 modes for pro would be perfect to give small teams like mine room to grow before we reach the scale where an enterprise plan would be worth consideration.

Please increase the number of available modes for Organisation plan to be double. There should at least be difference between Professional and Organisation given the cost difference between the two. We only need 2x more than we have, not the 10x that you get by paying so much more for Enterprise.
This post is 1yr old - we are on the enterprise plan and 4modes on that plan is such a frustration - you cant even create enough modes to create a collection with all breakpoints
So frustrating.

I thought enterprise has 40 modes?

Why double??? You are falling for the scam. The limitation to any number is artificial!!! Just remove the cap altogether.
In the same way that there is no limit on the number of cat pictures I can import into a single figma design file, there should be no limit to the number of modes!
After Config, still this:
This is unbelievable. I spent a lot of time learning about Variables, and integrating our design system with them, only to realize later that only 4 modes are available, which basically makes this whole feature useless.
There are obviously no good reason for this limit, it can't possibly require a lot of resources from Figma to support more modes.
This hostile move is making me completely reconsider my opinion of Figma. I thought it was a tool I could rely on for all design work, but I will now use Penpot for all future projects. It might not be as performant, but I never want to be stuck with such a hostile product decision again in the future.

Very well said. It is getting ridiculous. Treat your customers right or they’ll leave, that’s it.
I'm a former product designer turned indie dev and I just hit the four-mode limit on the "Professional" plan. I’m shocked it’s so low! Most apps with theming support need more than four modes, and as others have pointed out, web breakpoints are another area where higher limits are essential.
What’s frustrating is that even the Organization plan wouldn’t meet my needs—and I’m just a solo app developer! I really hope this is a technical limitation and not just rent-seeking, because the current limits feel arbitrary and out of touch.
FWIW, here’s my suggestion:
Plan comparison showing proposed Variable Mode limits: 10 for Professional and 20 for Organization (up from the current limit of 4). Enterprise remains unchanged…hoping that’s just a tech limit.
Please Figma, increase the amount of modes available on the plans!

I agree with you completely!
One thing I find a bit funny though is that you rightfully recognised that the limitation is arbitrary, yet you proceed to propose a chart that is as arbitrary as Figma’s limit.
We need unlimited modes. Full stop.
Sorry had to point that out
It’s a simple JSON in the Background, there is no technical limitation around this.

Fair point—it’s still “arbitrary,” but at least it’s more logical if Figma’s goal is to scale features with plan tiers.
Of course, I’d love no limits, but I assume they’re there to push upgrades as team needs grow. Still, the fact that both Pro and Org plans are capped at 4 modes is bananas.
I do like your approach of asking for no limits—maybe that’s more likely to get us something better in the end.
Seconding this would be useful. I am working on a cash-strapped campaign that is putting out materials in several languages. I use variables to manage instances of the Wordmark and Other logos, but also to swap out fonts for different languages. We are producing materials in Arabic, Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, Creole, Chinese, and more, so we hit the mode limit very very quick, but cannot pay for a higher figma tier.
@djv what’s the status of this?
Is there any way we can get Figma to change this? Honestly ridiculous that our organization with only 3 full seats is unable to create a more extensive design system. We have over 30 different brands and variable modes really feels like the best solution here for us to make everything workable!
Same here… Can we please get some input on this from the Figma team?
@djvaliao @djv
Please, Figma, we need this urgently!!!
We can’t continue working properly with Figma without this basic feature and switching to an Enterprise license is entirely out of bounds.
Your pricing structure does not scale realistically.
4 variable modes are not sufficient, this limit is frustrating.
Please resolve this ASAP!
You are charging based on the size of the organisation, so this is an arbitrary limit. See, I am an individual and it doesn’t make sense for me to upgrade to enterprise for this.
I understand the concept of ladder pricing, but this doesnt make sense.
What next? Will you restrict the number of pages per file?

Thank you, exactly my thoughts too. It is completely arbitrary why they chose to limit modes.
Limiting the number of variables, pages, cat pictures, components or post-its would be as absurd…
@figma We need more modes
@figma I 100% second this. The Organizations plan should include at least 20 variables, anything less simply won’t work, and we’re definitely not an Enterprise-level company :)

Just got a message back from my account manager. They will not be doing anything about this. I would recommend everyone here contact support also.
In 2025, I find the mode limit crazy. The gap between 4 and 40 modes between the two paid plans is incredible. Most people only need 5 or 6 for standard web projects.
Yes, there are paid plugins to get around this but from what I’ve heard these are not reliable, buggy and aren’t ideal.
So please Figma Team… Be professional… and add a few additional modes for the Professional Plan to allow us to be professional please.

Love it! Seriously this is real. We can’t work properly with just 4 modes.
Hey, Figma, it’s been 2 years. We’re all watching your disconsideration towards the issue and your users.
