Glass Effect API missing light reflection border when applied via plugin

When applying the Glass effect via my plugin using Figma's Glass Effect API, the light reflection border that appears around elements when applying the effect directly through Figma's UI is missing. This creates inconsistency between plugin-applied and manually-applied Glass effects, even when using identical parameters.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a frame in Figma
  2. Apply Glass effect directly via Figma's Effect panel - note the light reflection border around the element
  3. Clear the effect
  4. Apply the same Glass effect with identical parameters via the Liquid Glass plugin
  5. Observe that the light reflection border is missing in the plugin-applied version

Expected Behavior

The Glass effect applied via the plugin API should be visually identical to the same effect applied manually through Figma's UI, including the light reflection border.

Actual Behavior

The Glass effect applied via the plugin is missing the light reflection border that's visible when applying the effect manually, despite using identical parameters (light angle, intensity, refraction, depth, dispersion, and frost).


Technical Details

  • I've reviewed the Glass Effect API documentation thoroughly and found no parameter to control this border reflection
  • All other aspects of the effect (refraction, etc.) appear to be working correctly
  • The issue is consistent across different element types (frames, components, etc.)
  • Plugin is using the latest version of Figma's API

Questions

  1. Is there an undocumented parameter needed to enable the light reflection border?
  2. Is this a known limitation of the Glass Effect API?
  3. Can this be addressed in a future API update to ensure consistency between plugin-applied and manually-applied effects?

Additional Information

I've attached a screenshot showing the difference between the plugin-applied effect (left) and the manually-applied effect (right). The light reflection border is clearly visible in the right example but missing in the left.

Thanks for pointing this out! A clear breakdown like this really helps. Maybe try manually adjusting the layer’s blending mode or adding an outer glow in the plugin as a temporary fix. Hopefully the Figma team can address this API limitation soon.

Hey hey y'all 🙌 Thanks for the original post, and for circling back and keeping it alive ​@Yair_Zaks1 

I’d like to get us more info so we can get it on to the team that owns these endpoints. Would you be up for putting together a fresh 2026 reproduction case with me?

Here's what would make the strongest case (IMO):

A short screen recording is the single most useful thing — apply Glass through the Effects panel, then clear it and re-apply the same settings through your plugin, all in one take so nothing moves in between. That captures the difference far better than stills.

Alongside the video, if you can include:

  • A couple of before-and-after screenshots (UI-applied vs plugin-applied), framed identically

  • Your operating system (OS) and exact Figma version (Help > About Figma — this thread goes back a ways and a lot has shipped since)

  • The exact Glass values you're using (light angle and intensity, refraction, depth, dispersion, etc)

  • Which plugin you're applying with

One thing that got me in my quick test — Glass refracts whatever's behind the element, so put something with detail behind your shape, like a photo or some colorful layers, and give the shape a low or no fill opacity. We want to try to not muddy the comparison. 

No promises on turnaround once it's there, but a clean, current reproduction file is genuinely our best shot. Talk soon! — Jaycee

Hi ​@Jaycee Lewis, thanks for your reply.
I tested it 2 weeks ago (before your reply) and it didn’t work (Figma effect was adding the border while plugins/mcp’s didn’t - like in the image and first video “Testing old versions” attached ):

 

But now, after testing it today, I see the plugin started applying the border correctly (image + video attached):

 

Nothing changed on my end (didn’t touch the code of it for a few weeks already).

So it looks like it was fixed somehow and we are ok now, haha.
Maybe ​@zewu can test it once again with the MCP and let us know if it was fixed also there.

Any idea how it was fixed? In my plugin it just started working correctly now haha
Of course I´m available also for a zoom/teams meeting if more info / tests needed.

This looks like a limitation of the current Glass Effect API rather than something you’re missing. Figma often applies certain visual enhancements in the UI layer that aren’t fully exposed through the plugin API, and the light reflection border seems to be one of those subtle details.

If all your parameters match and other properties are rendering correctly, it’s likely not an implementation issue on your side. Hopefully, Figma will expose more control in future updates for consistency.

I’ve seen similar gaps in tools before—teams like Isoftmarts usually handle this by creating custom visual layers to replicate missing effects when APIs fall short.
