When selecting multiple frames for export Figma will ignore some frames unless I go and manually export them individually. Is there something I am missing where when I group select 5+ frames and click export that I need to do to ensure everything is being exported at once, or is this a bug within Figma?

One possible reason for this could be your export settings, can you check if "Ignore overlapping layers" is enabled?
This setting is turned on by default when exporting as a PNG, which means only selected layers are included while overlapping elements might be excluded. The way you select frames could impact what gets exported, depending on whether this setting is enabled or disabled.
