[Bug] Thumbnails Not Appearing in Files

OMG they randomly disappear constantly. How is this such a hard problem for Figma to solve? Just give us a thumbnail upload option.

Yes please. The thumbnails are not showing up every often.

This is also driving me bonkers on a daily basis. It’s like the playing the world’s worst game of whack-a-mole. I have now wasted hours of my life recreating dozens of project thumbnails that just (seemingly) randomly totally disappear. It’s especially wonderful when the file is a client presentation. Ugh.

I’ve done a bunch of internet searches and found that while there are a lot of different troubleshooting recommendations, none of them fix a damn thing.

Absolutely ridiculous how many huge FIgma feature updates have occurred while this completely unacceptable bug goes unfixed.

I honestly do not understand how this hasn’t made Figma’s own internal design team stage a revolt.

Hey all - sorry for the trouble with thumbnails. We actually surfaced a bug recently (after everyone’s responses here) that affected thumbnail images. This should be fixed now.

Can you all completely quit and reload the app?


Or if you’re on the browser, completely quit and reload Figma to see if you still have issues?

If you’ve been having long-standing issues with this, let me know.

Hi whenever I tried to open figma my files are not showing there always white background and layers are showing on left side but when I click on it there is no appearance of layers not frames rectangles text etc only white color is showing 

I tried to refresh it but same problem is coming again and again

Im facing the same problem, theres something wrong with figma, i can only see white bg, with the left and right panels. also the middle one at the bottom, i tried making something but it got stuck. i cleared cache and changes browsers but its not working.

I still have this problem, and it’s even worse using Figma in a browser.

After seeing this message that there was a bug fix, in the app I did the Troubleshooting > Reset Figma and Restart command. The thumbnails did come back, but within a day, my thumbnails started disappearing again. One thing I noticed; the thumbnails that disappeared were for files that I was actively or recently working on.

I also loaded the browser version and it was significantly worse. I emptied the cache in Safari (version 26.0.1), quit and restarted the app, and happily saw all my file thumbnails return. But as I moved back and forth between my starred projects and the All projects view, the thumbnails for each project went blank.

So on the app, the thumbnails continue to go blank on my recent/active files, and in the browser I cannot see a single thumbnail for any file at all.

This is incredibly frustrating. My agency uses thumbnails to convey a lot of information about the file at a glance. And file names alone are often insufficient — they take more time to mentally parse (for me at least), and they often get truncated, becoming even more unhelpful.

Anyways, I would happily provide data, info, or screenshots if it might help expedite a solution.

I been having the same problem for month, just did a full “Reset Figma and Restart” two days ago and just got another document I edited this morning. It’s driving me nuts !

This is driving me crazy lately. I just created nice custom thumbnails for all my files too, they looked perfect and were so useful for weeks, and suddenly none of them are showing up.

There is this option to “Restore Default Thumbnail” now, and it worked for one file, but turned the other thumbnail completely black. It’s so annoying, and the more files I get, the worse it gets.

Hello everyone — thanks for keeping us posted about this! Our engineering team is actively investigating the reports around missing thumbnails.

If you’re able to share a few examples where this is happening with our Technical Quality team, that will help us pinpoint the cause. Please fill out this secure form and include:

  1. a link to the file(s) where thumbnails aren’t loading
  2. whether this is happening in the Figma Desktop App, browser, or both
  3. if in the browser, whether it also occurs in another browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari).

Appreciate your patience and collaboration while we continue to investigate — we’ll update this thread as soon as we have more to share.

Same on my end - everytime i work on a file thumbnail disappears.. Did the cache reset multiple times. I restore thumbnails on a daily basis 😭

Thumbnails keep disappearing. Great job for an intern to fix for you guys. Shouldnt have taken 2 months to fix?


It seems to affect files that are open when Figma attempts to refresh its thumbnail preview.

Hi everyone, I just checked in with the engineers working this issue and wanted to share an update.

Root cause identified: The team has pinpointed the source of this behavior in the Figma Desktop app and is prioritizing a fix. While I don’t have a specific timeline to share yet, work is actively underway.

💡 Temporary solution: A fix is already available in the beta version of the Figma Desktop App. You can try that version by following the steps in this guide: Guide to the Figma Desktop App → Download the beta version.

We’re keeping a close eye on this and will return with updates as soon as they’re available.

Please let me know here if you’re still seeing this behavior in either the browser or desktop app. Thanks to everyone for your patience and for sharing reports while we work on a full fix.

Still seeing this behavior in desktop app. Not sure I’m allowed to share edit access to files, but happy to connect to walk through Figma on a call, if needed. Definitely has been very frustrating to organize and get through files!

💡 Update for everyone following along: A fix is included in the next version of the main app. Once you see a prompt to update, go ahead and install it — the thumbnails should appear again afterward.

We’re continuing to monitor the rollout and will share any additional updates from engineering as soon as they’re available. Thanks for your patience while this gets fully resolved.

Edit:

I just opened in Figma Beta and it didn’t work. I had to go to the broken pages, re-set them as thumbnails, but then the thumbnails just showed up black. Upon quitting and restarting Figma Beta, the thumbnails were all restored. 

There might be lingering issues from the existing problem or people trying to fix it themselves. Then you should figure out what that whole black thumbnail is about.

I just want to chime in and say I too am experiencing this and my boss keeps bringing this up every time he’s looking for something in Figma. “Where are my beautiful covers?” he asks. Please I hope this gets fixed soon!

Oh my god, thumbnails so bad, is very frustrating!. You should add the possibility of refresh the thumbnails so it come back or something.

Hi I did exactly this and no dice. i still see empty covers. will this ever be fixed? it is very disturbing to navigate projects where some covers show up and some don’t.
