Hi, I am getting an error accessing my file "This is an unassigned draft file.” I need help trying to re-access it or to see who is currently the admin of the file. I thought it was a file I created in a group project, but I am now receiving this error. Thanks for the help!

Hi @jeiler

I understand that you’re seeing the “This is an unassigned draft file” message when trying to access your file.

This usually means that the file is in the Drafts space of a team you’re no longer a member of. Please note that once you leave a team, you no longer have access to any files, projects, or libraries that belong to that team.

When a user is removed from a team, any draft files they owned are automatically moved to the Unassigned Drafts folder. These files can only be accessed and managed by team admins only on the Professional plan and organization admins only on the Organization or Enterprise plans

At this point, I recommend reaching out to an admin from the team or organization you were previously part of.

They can help recover or reassign the file by following the steps outlined in this guide: Manage drafts of removed users

Thanks,

jeiler

@Junko3 Thanks for the reply! Can this happen if I created the original file? I’m pretty sure I made the file, but it’s now saying I don’t have access. Is there any way to see who the admin is on a file?

Ah yes, unassigned draft files can be confusing! Happens to me when I forget to move things into a proper project — glad someone else pointed it out.

Hi @jeiler

Yes, this can happen even if you originally created the file.

Each team has its own Drafts space, as explained in our guide: Updates to how drafts work

If a file was created in your personal Drafts while you were part of a team and you’re later removed from that team, the file can become unassigned and be moved into a Shared projects area. In that state, only team admins can move the file back into an active team for continued access and management as detailed in our guide Manage drafts of removed users.

While we understand how concerning this can be, for security reasons we’re not able to share the email address or identity of the team admin who has permission to reassign the file.

I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but at this point we recommend reaching out to any team admins or owners you may know who could help restore access.

Thanks,
