Hi all,

When I create a shape, fill it with an image, and set it to ‘crop’ I used to be able to adjust the size and placement of the image.

For some reason now I can only adjust the size of the shape, and not the image that is filling it.

How can I get this functionality back? Google and ChatGPT have told me to click on the thumbnail in the fill section, or double click on the image on the canvas, but neither of these work. They just open up the option to edit the shape again.

Screenshot attached for reference.

Hoping I’m missing something simple.

Hi @tj-makes-things, thanks for reaching out and apologies for the delayed reply!

Are you still having issues with cropping the image? I just tested this in the desktop app and in browser and it’s still working as expected on my end, and your screenshot looks correct as well.

To crop an image:

  1. Select a layer with an image fill.
  2. Choose one of the following:
    • Click  in the properties panel.
    • From the Fill section of the right sidebar, click the image thumbnail. Then, open the image mode dropdown and select Crop.
  3. Click and drag one of the 8 blue handles around the image to crop it. You can also:
    • Reposition the image: Click and drag.
    • Resize the image: Click and drag the edges of the image.
    • Rotate the image or crop section: Hover on the outside of a corner until the  rotate cursor appears. Then click and drag.
    • Keep the current aspect ratio of the image or crop section: Hold ⌘ Command for Mac or Control for Windows while cropping or resizing.
    • Crop or resize opposite sides of the image or crop section: Hold Option for Mac or Alt for Windows while dragging.
  4. Click anywhere on the canvas to apply the crop. You can also press Esc or Return.

To quickly crop an image, you can also hold Cmd for Mac or Ctrl for Windows while clicking and dragging the corners of the image.

Hi @djv  I've just experienced the same issue (using desktop app v.125.6.5 on Windows 11)

EDIT: I've just realised that you are able to grab the corners and edges of the image to resize it, but there are no handles visible to show this is possible until you hover over the edge of the image. Quite confusing.

Image only shows scaling handles on hover

I’ve run into this too. One workaround that works for me is to double-click the shape to enter ‘crop’ mode, then make sure you actually select the image layer from the left-hand Layers panel. Sometimes clicking on the canvas only selects the shape again.

Thanks for the update and for sharing the video, @Barbie-qu — that really helps clarify what you’re running into. I’ll raise this with the appropriate team and circle back if there are any updates.

In the meantime, could you double-check the suggestion from @Wirkkarl and let us know if that helps? And just to be sure: Is the main issue the lack of visible handles on the image, or is there anything else that hasn’t been covered we should take a closer look at?

Hi @Tom Reem,

The workaround from @Wirkkarl does not exactly work because when you apply an image fill to a shape there is not a separate image layer to select (see image below). However, I discovered that you can enter crop mode by pressing Alt + double clicking the image.

Shape with image fill has no separate image layer

As you suggested, the main issue I face is the lack of visible handles on the image when you are in crop mode, to indicate that you can manipulate the image. I can understand that seeing two sets of handles is not the neatest solution, but hiding the image scale functionality until you hover over it is not obvious. Not sure if this behaviour has changed over time, but on several occasions I've had to resort to a google search just to remind me how to complete this common task.

In general, I have never found it very intuitive to work with images and shapes in Figma.

Hi @tj-makes-things

This sounds like you’re working in Figma, and you’re expecting the old behavior where you could double-click into a “Fill → Image (Crop)” to move/resize the image inside the shape separately from the shape itself.

A couple of things may be happening:

1. Check the Fill Mode

  • In the right sidebar → Fill → Image, make sure the mode is set to “Crop” (not “Fill,” “Fit,” or “Tile”).

  • Only Crop mode allows you to reposition and scale the image inside.

2. Double-Click Behavior Changed

Figma updated this a while back:

  • Double-clicking on the object now defaults to editing the shape.

  • To adjust the image inside, you need to:

    1. Select the shape.

    2. In the Fill section, click on the little crop icon (next to the dropdown where it says Crop).

    3. This enters the crop tool — you’ll see bounding handles and can drag the image separately from the shape.

3. Keyboard Shortcut (Quick Access)

  • Select the shape with the image.

  • Press Enter (Return) → you enter crop mode directly, allowing you to move/resize the image.

  • Press Esc to exit.

4. If It Still Doesn’t Work

  • Make sure the shape isn’t flattened or converted into a vector path with the image baked in. If it is, you won’t be able to move the fill separately anymore.

  • Check whether you accidentally applied the image as a Mask instead of a Fill. Masks behave differently.
