Section titles are exporting as part of the image?

I put a bunch of stuff in a section and named it Section 2. If I then select that section and export it, it exports (correctly) as Section 2.png, but in the exported png it actually includes the little “Section 2” pill or whatever it’s called. This has to be a bug… right? How do I turn this off?

Selecting this selects the entire Section - hitting “hide” now or changing its opacity changes the visibility of the section and everything in it.

The only workaround I see is to convert the Section to a frame, which I can then export without the name showing. Later I can convert the frame back to a section if I want. It might not be a bug, but it’s definitely one of those “Who would ever want this?” oddities.

Sorry, I can’t

Just to be clear - because this is hard to describe - the piece I’m talking about is built into Figma, it’s not something I’m adding to the design. Every section has a name, and unlike groups or frames or anything else Figma is displaying that Section name as part of its export.

Hey @Travis2, thanks for flagging this and apologies for the spam replies!

This is a new intended behavior for Sections that we distinguished to behave differently from Frames. Users have been reporting this as unusual though. We’ll pass your feedback onto the team for reconsideration.

Thanks for the response, I figured it might be something new! I personally would never need the section name to export like that - I don’t know what I would ever use that for, especially with no ability to format it. But it’s easy for me to convert down to a frame, so no biggie. Thanks!

Also just ran into this behaviour.

I’m creating a logo with a shadow backdrop on a complicated image. Exporting the section includes the section name as part of the resulting .png. Exporting as a frame does not do this.

Pretty silly behaviour tbh. It shouldn’t matter if I am exporting a frame or section. Any image export shouldn’t include the name of the export directly in the exported image itself.

Agreed, it’s just not a pattern I’ve seen in any other design tools. In the meantime right-clicking and hitting “convert to frame” will let you export how you need, and then you can just cmd+s to turn it back into a section again. This whole thing is actually making me question why I love sections so much, mostly I just love the automatic 80px padding. 🙂

Hi, will this behaviour stay? It is super annoying, can I at least turn it off anywhere?

Andre_Pimenta

REALLY useless and annoying. An export should be an export not a preview

A partial workaround is to have an untitled section name, as in empty. The only issues with this are it exports a bounding rectangle without a name and the file is named untitled.xxx, which is editable but still an incomplete solution. An option to hide bounding rect and name pill would be a great, simple, and elegant solution.

Still happening, still weird. It’s difficult to imagine anyone wanting this.
