Yes. and Make comments work again on screen with modal.
It seems numbers where like “comments IDs”. It was a common routine to tell the number of the comment and than start a discussion. Think about clients who struggle to learn basic things on figma - than imagine they getting crazy trying to specify the comment they’re talking about because the little numbers disappeared 😮 “And how I copy the link?” “Inside the comment?” “I don’t see any link” 😱
Please, bring the number back. We like them.
Totally agree to bring back comment numbers. It helps a lot when working with a team
As the one designer in my team, I preferred the previous version of comment tool, with numeration. During reviews, I place a lot of comments and without numbers I feel a bit confused. Also the actions to see or edit an existent comment have became less immediate. Thank you.
Yes, please bring comment numbers back - we also reference comment numbers in internal conversations
definitely, the worst “improvement” done to Figma 😦
Really need those comment numbers. I use them all time, even when referring between comments (“see comment no. 5 for more details” etc.)
Any answer from Figma team to this topic?? I am part of a team with 90 designers using this comment tool daily!
For a tool that defines itself as “the collaborative interface design tool” they took away a key method that their users use to collaborate and reference specific comments. It feels like the Figma team doesn’t use their own product or they would have known the importance of these comment numbers.
Back on January 11th, with in 5 minutes of seeing the new update, I opened a ticket with support and they had this to say:
Thanks for reaching out about this! This was an intentional change, but since we’ve seen a number of users report this as a bug, we’ve created a report for the engineers so they can track this feedback — I’ve added your details there.
Since this is ‘technically’ a feature request I’d also suggest posing in our
Support Forum with this feedback, either in an existing thread (Bring back Comment numbers for example) or starting a new thread for any feedback that you don’t think fits in an existing thread.
Intentional or not, upgrades shouldn’t take away valuable features. Its a bug. Please fix it. Letting this issue toil in the bottomless bit of “Feature Requests” only damages the integrity and reputation of Figma as being ‘collaborative’ tool.
Numbers did get back, but only in the right side bar in a very discreet way below your name on a #. But still missing from the artboards.
My english is rather bad, sorry, but i’ll try to explain several important things of how ppl use your product:
- Often notes are used not for communications but for placing logic description on screens. If so there will be lots of comments on canvas and they will be there for a long time
- Project team see project every day - they remember layout of frames and layout of comments so they know where to look for some comment
- If there are lots of comments on canvas they need to be as light as possible or there will be severe lags
Your update:
- Made comments more loaded with some fancy functions and animations - they become slower
- Made numbers disappear from canvas - we remember layout of comments but we need that numbers on canvas for fast access to specific comment
- Implemented comments grouping - you may think that it is cool feature but it’s really not only useless but harmful for usability.
3.1. Thats not google map with some Burger King locations which we see once a year. We remembered comments layout in our projects and now it’s gone.Without grouping we can get access to comment in one click and now we need to scroll-scroll-scroll and only after that we can click on specific comment.
3.2. Grouping lowers lags when comments are grouped. Ok, but as I said we need to scroll for bringing them closely and when comments are close they are degrouped - all of them - and they start to lag. They are more animated and fancy and they lag more then ever.
Please come in sense. We understand thay you raised 200 mil. recently and need to do something animated and fancy but please make old comments an option. Now they are broken
This update was terrible! Many users complain that they create a comment, hit Enter, and the comment disappears. This update was not merely pointless, it was harmful.
that was a terrible idea which has removed comments number. why figma team don’t know how comments number is very important for many users.
We see your are trying to make something better but WE NEED COMMENT NUMBERS BACK ON CANVAS INSTEAD OF AVATARS.
If your new effective manager likes that avatars ok, but plz MAKE AN OPTION
You guys could keep the avatars (although its zero relevant) but you guys could simply resolve it just putting the first “avatar ball” to be the comment number id.
It appears Figma forgot to do UX research/user testing on this one before “just doing.” Lol

Please bring them back, Why is this thread 2 years old and nothing has been done?
I track change requests with comment numbers in a separate spreadsheet. I would like to be able to search comments by comment number, however when I enter the comment number in the comment search, it returns, “No comments matched your search.”
