I’m having trouble figuring out what the addition of having corners showing around a layer panel icon means:

I believe it is for absolute positioning in auto layout.

How do I undo that?

If you’ve not found it already:

Select the frame which has that icon.
In the Design > Frame settings panel, find an icon which looks like a plus sign with the border around it. This will be selected. Click it to unselect it and turn off absolute positioning.
