Thumbnails will not be updated (or not predictably anyway) in the project gallery unless you perform Restore default thumbnail + Set as thumbnail sequence on the wanted frame. This problem has been around forever, would be great to finally fix it as it is pretty annoying.

Found this ticket describing it, which was closed sadly: My new thumbnail didn't refresh even after waiting 8h how to force refresh?

This is happening to me as well, except performing the Restore default thumbnail + Set as thumbnail sequence on the desired frame doesn’t work for me. I can’t seem to get some thumbnails to ever appear properly. Some thumbnails show correctly, some don’t. It’s been this way for several months.

I’ve found it refreshes more consistently if I set the thumbnail to what I want, and then close the file… Inconvenient, I know, but the response time seems to be a bit better.

I would love for Figma to fix this problem, as it’s very annoying. But in the meantime, this has been getting the job done:

  1. Make desired changes to thumbnail

  2. Option + drag to duplicate this thumbnail

  3. Wait a few seconds, then select the duplicate and choose Set as thumbnail

  4. Delete the first thumbnail that you made the changes on

  5. Reload the tab of the file you’re on

  6. Check the project page to see if it has updated – if not, reload the page

This is the only reproducible way I have found to get around the thumbnail bug(s).

Been discussing the issue with Figma support, and apparently the delay before thumbnail gets updated can be up to 60 seconds (that’s what you can expect). Just be patient 🙂
