Naming component box option has gone?

Hi I am new to Figma. Just noticed that when I have created a new component the name does not appear on the box as I see in tutorials? I usually rename in the layers panel but would be nice to have that as another option. I am not sure whether this is something that can be adjusted in preferences? Or perhaps this is a new update of Figma that has removed this?

Hey @Eva4, thanks for reaching out!

It’s hard to be sure what’s happening without seeing your file. Currently, when I create a new component, a default name will appear as expected.

Is your second screenshot by any chance an instance and not a main component? Instances have a default name applied to them, but it’s not visibly shown on the canvas to allow users to identify main components vs. instances.

Hi @dvaliao yes it is a component, I was just checking to see if it was a new update to Figma perhaps I’ve turned the visibility of it off somehow?

I also believe you probably have an instance of the component selected, and not the component itself. What does the selection look like in your left tree?

Just realized that I had the frame overlapping in another frame, since a component acts as a frame I was not registering this but when I dragged it away from it, it displayed the name. I have illustrator mentality haha so I was seeing it as an artboard.
