I’ve received a link to a Figma file from another team. The problem is that the link came in a chat related to a certain meeting that occurred last week, so as time goes on it’s only going to get harder and harder to find that link. I want to somehow bookmark this file so I can return to it quickly.

Hitting a few roadblocks…

  1. I can only view this file in two ways: Inside the actual file, and from the search results page. I don’t know which project this file lives in and I don’t know how to find that out.

  2. There doesn’t appear to be such a thing as “favorites” anymore. I can click the “add to favorites” options from either of these views, but nothing happens. I have no favorites section in my sidebar and I can’t figure out how to get one.

  3. There’s no way to “star” these files from either of these views, which is usually how I bookmark files. Adding to favorites does not add it to my “starred” files section.

  4. I cannot drag the file from the search results to my “starred” files section.

Any ideas as to how I can easily return to this file? I guess I can open it in the browser and bookmark it in my browser, but that’s far from ideal.

EDIT:

This is looking more and more like a bug… I tried accessing it from the Recent files page and I’m seeing this:

Is it starred or not? I’d say not because it’s not in my “starred” list, but it does have it checked in the dropdown, so something’s wrong. Are we not allowed to star files from other teams (if that’s even where this file came from, I have absolutely no idea)? I have permission to view it so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be allowed to save it for more future viewing… I made a separate bug post plz lmk if I should delete this.

Hey @KellyK, sorry for the trouble and frustration!

Normally, you should be able to “Star” files directly in the file browser via the star icon in the upper, right-hand corner of its thumbnail:

After starring the file, it should appear under your Starred files in the left Sidebar.

From what you’ve shared, this may be a bug. Are you using Figma in the browser or the desktop app?

Thanks for your help! I’m using the desktop app. On the search results page I switched from list view to grid view and I do see that star button on the top right corner for every file except for the one I’m trying to star.

I’m pretty sure it belongs to another organization that was hired as consultants so that might have something to do with it (I can’t see who owns the file and there’s no link to go to it’s project.) Makes sense that I’d only have a limited view of it but would still be nice to add a shortcut to it 🙂

Thanks for the additional context, @KellyK!

Yes, that is likely the reason why the star isn’t showing up for the file. I’ll send this feedback over to the team to if it’s something we can possibly change or improve upon in the future!

thanks again!

I have the exact same problem, I am not able to find a way to “star” a file that came from an outside team or a shared file from a personal “team”. I have tried in both the web app and the desktop app.
