Combine components into 1 and change instances

We are updating our icons in our design system foundation library after rebranding. With this, icons don’t only get a new style, but we want to do some minor improvements.
We want to combine 3 icons into 1, and make sure that all instances of these 3 icons across all files are updated to the 1 selected. But we can’t figure it out…

We tried with the ‘merge it’ plugin but that did’t help (even though the description is exactly what we were looking for). We also tried combining the 3 icons as variants to create 1 component, but can’t figure out how to merge the variants into 1 and overwrite the instances.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
