Auto layout breaks mask

When I apply auto layout to a group containing a mask, the mask “breaks.” The direction of the arrow changes (down instead of up), the “bg” layer disappears (parent group absorbs as a Fill), and the mask no longer… masks.

This seems unintuitive, and I can’t find anything in this forum or on the learn center. Am I missing something?

Yes, putting a mask in an auto-layout will change the layer ordering and mess up your mask. Here are some ways to address the issue.
