Allow us to dock/move the new UI3 toolbar

Why are we putting the toolbar on the bottom of the UI? Either stick it to the top middle or just make it movable.

Please move the toolbar back to the top, or give us an option to do so. Itā€™s not an iPad or mobile app, why does it need to be at the bottom? Such a BAD UX decision from a UI/UX design app.

No, itā€™s not perfect. Itā€™s horrible. The UX when designing in mobile vs computer should never, ever, be the same.

I totally agree. My comment was a sardonic one - itā€™s ā€œperfectā€ if you donā€™t give a single crap about desktop users that want to actually design things and not just spew out derivative AI garbage. Seems this is the direction Figma is heading in along with every other Silicon Valley company.

Many users have expressed frustration with the current floating dock in Figma UI 3, as it obscures important areas of the workspace, making it difficult to work efficiently, especially with intricate designs.

Please allow users to dock the toolbar at the top of the workspace as in earlier versions. Alternatively, an option to move the dock to a user-preferred location would greatly enhance usability.

I really hate this update! HATE! I spent an hour trying to find a way to reposition it before discovering this post.

2 Reasons why I strongly recommend giving the option to customize or at least place toolbar back at the top:

  1. Muscle memoryā€”Iā€™ve been designing with it there for so long that I automatically look there to find my tools. All of my tabs, global tools are at the top. Itā€™s just intuitive to go there.
  2. The floating bar at the bottom makes me feel like I have less real estate even though I probably donā€™t. I feel like it gets in the way of what Iā€™m working on. Iā€™ve never hated an update more than this one. Sorry, I love using Figma, but this update has caused me so much frustration. Please bring back option to move doc tool bar above (It does not need to float.)

Iā€™m right there with you on this. On the flip side, Iā€™m learning all of the hotkeys so that I donā€™t ever have to access this toolbar. Having it float at the bottom is THE WORST!

+1 to the comment that ā€œmy laptop screen often blocks the bottom inch of my monitorā€¦ Exactly where the toolbar is.ā€ I cannot think of a position that is more difficult to find than this one. For most of the functions, I am used to using keyboard shortcuts, so it is less of an issue. However, I often lose track of new comments added to the file, and the red dot on the comment icon is the indicator I rely on.

+1, please make it more flexible!

The toolbar being at the bottom is making me go INSANE.
Super unconventional, i also always listen to music while using Figma, and the volume changer on windows pops up in the exact spot where the toolbar is. And i hate the 5 second wait for it to go away before I can use the toolbar.
The toolbar being at the bottom makes Figma feel very disorganized, it gives me the impression that this was done to feel modern, when it really just messes up efficiency and the UX

Iā€™ll have to add my opinion to this. The floating menu is super annoying and gets in the way of everything. The top bar in the previous UI worked great. It just needed a slight visual refresh but there was no need to remove it. Hope it gets fixed.

I donā€™t like the new toolbar placement. It gets in the way when youā€™re designing a website^ for example. Make it at least movable.

So I now see that this change has been complained about repeatedly since July. For some odd reason, I didnā€™t experience this change until much more recently. But now I am feeling the same pain as everyone else!! :man_facepalming: I meanā€¦ like many others have expressed, Iā€™m really not sure why this change even occurred in the first place. And since ā€œsomeoneā€ decided that this change was a good idea (I have no idea what they based that decision on) and had no problem making the changeā€¦ why canā€™t you all just change it back?? At least until you can figure out a way to make this toolbar ā€œfloatingā€ and allow users to place it wherever they want toā€¦ but just to ASSUME that users would actually prefer this change? Whichā€¦ CLEARLY they do not.

How about you just REVERT IT and work on a ā€œfloatingā€ customizable placement of it in the future? No one asked for this. Justā€¦ PLEASE put it back the way it was while you continue to work on a more customizable solution?? PLEASE???

You are 100% correct. The irony of making bad UI decisions from a company who offers a product forā€¦ wait for itā€¦ UI designers. :man_facepalming:

Yep, this is whack. I was searching for how to move the toolbar and was happy to see this post, but disappointed that it has been complained about for months and still no solution!

Waiting for updates!

Please stop with the generic canned ā€œThanks for the feedback weā€™ll pass it along!ā€ and allow us to revert the toolbar back to the top of the page where it should be. I remember requesting being able to rotate an object in Figma years ago and getting blown off for a long time. Hopefully this wonā€™t be the same. You already have the code, simply put it back the way it was PLEASE

This new toolbar positioning is very disruptive to my workflow. I need to be able to have it at the top because thatā€™s how I work. Please stop force-bolting everything to the bottom and turning our flow literally upside down

Hi!
Currently there are a left column and a right column with Panels (or option groups). I expected to be able to show/hide/group the panels I need (the same as in Photoshop). Currently the left and the right columns take too much space of my screen. Another thing is that there are options rarely used (for example Export section) but being on the screen all the time.

Another thing that disturbs me is the Bottom static bar in your new UI. I wanted to move it but with no luck.

Thank you for listening to your users!

I really like the new UI3 but I agree with the comments in the thread. I keep looking for the toolbar at the top of the screen; it is such an ingrained common pattern. It would be great to be able to have control of where the toolbar lives.
