Undo not working

Over the last few weeks, undo has not been working for me periodically. While designing I will be using “command + Z” as I’m working, and then all of a sudden it will stop working. It won’t work when using the edit menu → undo either. I often lose designs I’ve been working on and can’t find them on the version history.

The undo button works most of the time, but then all of a sudden it will stop working which is really frustrating because it’s unexpected and often results in losing work. To fix it, I usually quit the app and open again, but then a few days later it will happen again.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!!

For context, I am the using Figma App on my Macbook Air with the laptop keyboard.

Hey @Brooke Becker, thanks for flagging this!

A few things that would help us narrow down what’s causing this:

  • Could you confirm if this issue also happens when you’re using Figma in the browser?

  • Please try reinstalling the desktop app to see if that resolves the issue.

  • Does it stop working randomly? Is it happening in a specific file?

Also, since you mentioned you’re using a MacBook keyboard, please check your keyboard layout settings in Figma. If these don’t match your system layout, it can sometimes interfere with shortcuts like Command + Z.

Here’s how to check:

  1. Go to the main menu in your file (click the Figma logo in the top-left corner).

  2. Select Preferences -> Change Keyboard Layout.

  3. Choose U.S. QWERTY or whichever layout matches your Mac’s system keyboard. Find more info in our Help Center article: Select keyboard layout

Gayani,

Thanks for replying!

To answer your questions:

  • I don’t use Figma on the browser normally, so I’m not sure if it’s happening there. The issue doesn’t happen all of the time, so I only notice when it’s an issue.
  • I deleted and reinstalled the desktop app, so I’ll see if there’s any improvement.
  • It does stop working randomly and it’s happened in multiple files. I’ll be using the undo button one second and the next second it stops working and won’t work until I quit the app and start it up again.
I’ve noticed some patterns of it happening when there are other people shared on the file, but I haven’t paid enough attention to say for sure if that’s what causes it.

I did make sure my keyboard is correct since I saw that tip on another forum. As I mentioned, the keyboard shortcut and edit menu → undo both do not work when this happens.

Thanks for the help! I will update this forum if I notice anything will the newly downloaded app.

Hey @Brooke Becker, thank you for the detailed follow-up!

It’s great that you reinstalled the desktop app, hopefully that helps improve things. If the problem continues, please don’t hesitate to submit a bug report using this form. When submitting the bug report please download the desktop app debug logs and share it with the team, this way our team can look into the technical details more closely.

Feel free to keep us updated here in the forum if you notice any changes after reinstalling!

Thank you,

Gayani

I’m also now getting the same issue, and it us highly frustrating, since I cannot undo anything and have to close and reopen the app, meaning that is saves my file with the wrong state, and I cannot roll back as it will also undo many other changes I made and want to keep. Please could Figma sort this asap?

Hey @Rudi Sadler- could you please confirm the following details:

  • Does the issue also occur when using Figma in the browser?

  • Is this happening in one specific file or across all your files?

The previous user mentioned that reinstalling the desktop app improved things for them, so it might be worth giving that a try as well.

If reinstalling does not resolve your issue, please submit a bug report using this form. When you do, it would be super helpful to include your desktop app debug logs. This’ll give our team more technical details to investigate what’s causing this.

Thank you,

Gayani

Thanks Gayani

I only use the desktop app, as the browser is not ideal for me.

I cleared the cache (seen on another forum), and for now it seems ok. If it happens again, will log a ticket, thanks.
