MacBook 2019 vs M1 & Figma

Hi there,

I’ve been scratching my head for a couple of days now, and I figured I should probably give it a try here on the forums to get an answer for my problems.

I’ve got an iMac 27’ 2017 that I’ll be selling these days and getting myself a MacBook. Since my budget is limited:

I’ve got 3 options:

  • From a Friend - Get a MacBook Pro 16’ 2019 (i9 2,6 Hz, 64GB Ram, 2TB, 5500M 8GB) - $2000
  • New - Get a MacBook Pro 16’ 2021 M1 Pro (16GB Ram, 512GB) - $2500
  • New - Get a MacBook Pro 14’ 2021 M1 Pro (32GB Ram, 1TB) - $2500

I’m mostly using Figma and sometimes Photoshop, I do have multiple Figma projects opened at the same time (I could probably avoid that).

I also have a really decent desktop build that I’m using for really demanding tasks (Ryzen 9, 32GB, RTX 3070)

What would you do in such a position?

Thank you.

Hi David, I have a similar issue. Did you find an answer to your question? I see no one here gave you any help;P

Yeah, no one replied, but I did get my answer elsewhere.
It seems like people don’t use this forum that much.

I bought the M1 one. Figma works excellent, but I somehow assumed all my billion layer files would magically get super smooth, which is not the case. Figma still relies on connection loading times and many other things not linked to the hardware.
Nevertheless, it works flawlessly in most cases, and I love it.

I got the 2021 M1 16’ 32GB 1TB model. I’m pretty sure any M1 would do a pretty good job.

Edit: Don’t get me wrong, once things load it’s really smooth.
