Can we use variants instead of mouse up and mouse down to show the same action?

I recently came around these prototype triggers: mouse up & mouse down. I’ve never used them before but I dug up a little and found their functions similar to when we use a variant for a button state.
If anyone can elaborate a little, that’d be much help!
